(Crewe, 22 March 2022) Bentley and its audio partner Naim have partnered with a titan of the Hollywood music industry to produce a soundtrack like no other, developed specifically to showcase the exceptional abilities of Bentley’s pinnacle in-car sound system.
Composer and producer Steve Mazzaro, whose recent film score credits include No Time to Die and Dune, was commissioned by Bentley to craft a piece of music that would demonstrate the power, clarity and richness of the Naim system while also reflecting a musical interpretation of Bentley’s design philosophy – being inspiring, harmonious and potent.
The Flying Spur is the perfect concert hall for Mazzaro’s work, which is a showcase for Bentley’s astonishing Naim audio system. With a 2,200 watt amplifier driving a total of 19 speakers around the cabin and two kinaesthetic shakers in the front seats, the system has both the power and the frequency range to make any music sound exceptional. When the track has been designed specifically to match the system, the result is truly extraordinary.
Alain Favey, Bentley’s Member of the Board for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, comments:
“We know that music is a passion of many of our customers – indeed, the Bentley x Naim sound system is specified on almost 40 per cent of customer orders. It’s been a great pleasure to work with Steve Mazzaro to craft a piece of music to really demonstrate the prowess of the system. His talent, experience and incredible artistry have been inspirational to us. While the finished piece sounds amazing however you hear it, to truly appreciate every element of it you have to hear it in a Naim-equipped Bentley, where it’s unlike any in-car music experience I’ve ever had.”
Steve Mazzaro comments:
“To me, Bentley represents elegance and class but also power, speed and mechanical complexity. So for this piece I used guitars, plus powerful, heavy low synths and very technical drums combined with intricate hand percussion. As with the workings of a car, you don’t see them, but you know they’re there, working in the background. I wanted to take the listener on a journey, with the essence of a film to be in a listener’s subconscious mind, so there’s flow to this piece - starting a specific way and then leading the person somewhere.
“For the opening, I wanted everything to be done with smaller instruments, but be powerful, organic and kinetic. I then introduce this big, cinematic orchestra, before ending with an orchestral, electronic, explosive culmination. I really wanted to push the power of the Naim audio system and see what it was capable of, so this also became more of a technical endeavour. There are so many speakers, I wanted to try lots of panning effects, bouncing the sound from left to right. This is a score for the driver’s seat.”
The finished track, titled ‘The Extraordinary Journey’, will be distributed to Bentley’s global retailer network for use in showrooms, and will also be loaded into Bentley press cars around the globe. While listening in a Bentley is the best way to experience the piece, it can also be heard online at Bentley’s SoundCloud here.
The Extraordinary Journey
To showcase the system, Mazzaro’s near-10-minute-long track is in three chapters, that together take the listener on a journey through three different musical styles built around the same core motif. The opening section is driven by crisp and energetic flamenco guitar and gentle piano, on a foundation of swelling bass and rhythmic ethnic percussion, demonstrating the performance of the amplifier in filtering the right frequencies to the right speakers.
The second chapter is more orchestral, reflecting Mazzaro’s movie soundtrack background and highlighting incredible harmony around the cabin of the car. The richness of string instruments comes to the fore, before a quieter and calmer section played on acoustic guitar demonstrates the exceptional clarity delivered by the Naim option.
The third and final section truly exemplifies the word ‘potent’, as the motif transforms into an electronica-driven symphony of phenomenal depth and power, before the music reaches its climax with additional strings and electric guitar.
Working with the Best Musicians in the World
Once written, Mazzaro turned to some of the best instrumentalists in the world to bring the score to life. With in-person recording not possible thanks to Covid-19, the musicians recorded themselves remotely from countries around the world, before Mazzaro assembled their individual and extraordinary talents into one cohesive whole. The team comprised:
- Cellist Tina Guo, with whom Bentley has a long-standing friendship since she wrote, recorded and produced the soundtrack to launch Bentley’s first hybrid model in 2018. Renowned as one of the best cellists of the modern era, and an album artist in her own right, Guo recorded elements on acoustic and electric cellos from her studio in Las Vegas.
- Violinist Molly Rogers, whose skills with a violin brought the string sections to life in conjunction with Guo. Rogers has performed with a dizzying array of musicians as diverse as Andrea Bocelli, Pharrell, Miley Cyrus and Tenacious D, and recorded her sections from her home in Santa Clarita, California.
- Drummer Satnam Ramgotra, whose 30-year experience as a studio musician for TV and film, a composer and a live-performance drummer made him the perfect choice. Ramgotra performed on the soundtracks for The Lion King and The Dark Knight amongst many others. His drumming sections were recorded in Los Angeles.
- Guitarist Guthrie Govan, formerly of the Aristocrats and Asia (amongst others), and previously recognised as “Guitarist of the Year” by Guitarist magazine. Known for his astonishing technical ability alongside proficiency in a wide array of styles, Govan recorded multiple sections on both acoustic and electric guitars, from a studio in London.
- Flamenco guitarist Amir John Haddad, also known as El Amir. Previously nominated for a Latin Grammy, this German-Spanish guitarist is noted as being one of the best flamenco guitarists in the world, and recorded the key melodies for the opening chapter of the piece from his home studio in Spain.
- Percussionist Holly Madge, who adds to her skills as a drummer by specialising in a huge array of ethnic percussion instruments. Performing in the UK, Madge recorded her stems on the bongos, Peruvian cajón, South American caxixi and Egyptian darbuka.
- Bassist Juan Garcia-Herreros (also known as ‘Snow Owl’), originally from Colombia and ranked as the best bass player in the world in 2019. Garcia-Herreros played a custom six-string electric bass for the piece, recorded in his studio in Vienna, Austria.
Naim for Bentley
Naim for Bentley delivers the world’s most advanced music systems, both inside the Bentleys on the road and also for listeners at home via a relentless pursuit for the purest sound.
In the latest evolution of Naim for Bentley products and technology, the sound system in the Flying Spur features 21 speakers and transducers with 2,200 watts of amplification. Nine 80 mm advanced Balanced Mode Radiators (BMRs) deliver the core mid-range of the sound, backed up by four 6” x 9” bass drivers and a matching subwoofer. Top notes are handled by four 25 mm “Super Tweeters”, while the deepest bass is enhanced through the Active Bass Transducers in the front seats and one 32 mm transducer.
Sound settings can be accessed via a 12.3-inch HD touchscreen interface at the centre of the dashboard. Customers can configure this in a variety of ways: as a single display, split 2:1 or showing three different functions at the same time. The overall designs highlights simplicity of use with a contemporary and elevated aesthetic.
Fellow champions of British design and engineering, Naim and Bentley work collaboratively to deliver the most powerful in-car original equipment manufacturer (OEM) system available in the market.
Naim is a Queen’s Award winner for its innovation and having recently honed a trailblazing Digital Signal Processing (DSP) system, it realised it could apply an all-new approach to the in-car implementation. DSP would find itself at the very heart of the Naim for Bentley audio system, with this innovative technology offering a range of modes to optimise the in-car soundstage, depending on seating position and listening preferences. It ensures ultimate audio performance is maintained whatever the speed or road conditions.
Naim for Bentley’s audio system is compatible with Spotify, Apple Music, TIDAL and Deezer (amongst others) and allows customers to enjoy their own choice of music, digital radio or spoken word media such as audio books and podcasts.
Each new generation of Bentley has seen a refinement and an update from the original Naim for Bentley audio system. Beginning as a 15 speaker – 1,100 watt system in 2008, the system has evolved into a 2,200 watt amplifier feeding 21 speakers and transducers as featured in the Flying Spur.
The Naim for Bentley system has been designed to maintain performance even when the roof of the Continental GT Convertible is down, and as Bentley evolves its hybrid car line, beginning with the Bentayga Hybrid, the even quieter powertrains offer a different audio environment to design for altogether.
Naim for Bentley at Home
The Naim for Bentley audio system has been adjusted and refined over hundreds of hours of listening tests to convey the pure joy, excitement and emotional impact of listening to music while driving. But world-quality sound is equally important in the comfort of home. For the discerning aficionado, Naim for Bentley offers the special edition Mu-so wireless home audio system.
Inspired by the technology developed for in-car audio systems, Naim engineers worked closely with Bentley designers to incorporate Bentley’s signature design elements, such as the distinctive knurling pattern. Both brands share a luxurious, contemporary design aesthetic and this translated easily into collaborative home products.
The Naim Mu-so is a 450 watt speaker with six custom-designed drivers and a powerful 32-bit processor that allows high-resolution music from virtually any source. The Bentley edition is exclusively styled with Bentley design touches, including a lacquered wood finish, copper colour accents, subtly lit base, a specially woven speaker grille and the signature diamond pattern surrounding the illuminated control dial.
